PROFICIENCY IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES BROADENS GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES

Learning a foreign language is a truly enjoyable experience, especially for those who successfully master the four essential language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. There is a great sense of satisfaction in becoming part of a community of speakers of that language—not only understanding what is spoken and written but also gaining insight into the culture and customs of a particular people. Imagine being able to master Malay and English, while also becoming proficient in Arabic, Mandarin, and Spanish. Would it not feel as though you had gained access to more than half the world?

Language is a system of sound symbols used to convey feelings, thoughts, ideas, and various messages as a medium of communication between people. A foreign language differs from a second language; it is considered “foreign” because it is not commonly used by an individual or within a country. In Malaysia, English is regarded as a second language, whereas Spanish, Russian, or Turkish, for example, are considered foreign languages because they are not commonly used.

Tips for Mastering a Foreign Language

Learning a foreign language is similar to learning one’s mother tongue in terms of the four language skills, although the pedagogical approaches may differ. The following are six key tips for mastering a foreign language:

1. Determination

Anyone who wishes to learn a foreign language must set clear goals and have a vision of the level they want to achieve and the time frame in which they hope to do so. Half-hearted determination will not lead to success. It is common for learners to begin enthusiastically but lose motivation along the way. As a result, they may end up knowing only a few words such as shukran, afwan, ogenki desu ka, or arigatou gozaimasu—and nothing more. To succeed, one must be truly committed. For example, a student learning Turkish should imagine visiting and living in Turkey for several months and begin mastering the language now. Such determination helps the language become firmly embedded in one’s mind and develops the psychomotor skills involved in speaking.

2. Take Notes and Use Language Applications

Find language-learning applications that help build vocabulary and provide continuous self-assessment exercises. Today, there are numerous online language-learning apps that are systematic, user-friendly, and easily downloadable to mobile devices. Many are available free of charge at the basic level. Popular examples include Duolingo and Busuu. These applications offer a variety of languages, allowing learners to choose and study their target language in depth. They also provide different techniques and levels of instruction. New learners should systematically record the vocabulary they acquire as a reference for future learning.

3. Speak the Language

Seek out native speakers to communicate with and practise using the language you are learning. In today’s increasingly digital world, where people communicate extensively online, it is easier than ever to find native-speaking friends or teachers through social media platforms. They can become conversation partners through text messaging or daily conversations, or they may offer tutoring services to help learners improve their language skills.

4. Read Regularly

New learners should read extensively to improve their language proficiency. Reading expands vocabulary and helps learners understand language styles, particularly in writing. Reading translated versions of children’s books can also facilitate comprehension and familiarise learners with sentence structures in the new language. For example, reading stories whose plots are already familiar, such as Rapunzel or Aladdin, in translation can be very helpful. Likewise, e-books are widely available and offer diverse and engaging reading options. Their more relaxed writing style and abundant illustrations can greatly assist comprehension.

5. Listen Actively

Learning a foreign language also requires extensive listening practice in order to communicate effectively. Listening to native speakers is one of the best ways to develop language skills. This can be done through television, radio, films, and other forms of media. Watching movies in the target language helps learners appreciate the culture associated with the language. Today, films are easily accessible online through platforms such as YouTube. Similarly, listening to podcasts in the target language can help learners become accustomed to understanding issues, stories, and discussions presented in authentic speech.

6. Write and Publish

New learners should practise writing regularly and complete written exercises. Workbooks available in stores or online can help develop this skill. In addition, learners can keep personal journals and have them reviewed by teachers, tutors, or proficient speakers who can correct mistakes. For added satisfaction and motivation, these journals can be shared on Facebook, Instagram, or other social media platforms, or even published as e-books. There is no need to fear making mistakes because, as an Arabic proverb says, “The more languages you know, the more benefits you gain.”
