Serdang, 24 July - The Maritime Criminal Investigation Division Malayasia has collaborated with the Language Extension Unit from Centre for the Advancement of Language Competence (CALC), UPM to organise a two-week Thai Language course for 17 Maritime officers nationwide. The objective of this course is to produce competent language interpreters in Thai Language among the officers involved. This course aims to strengthen and improve the effectiveness and quality of investigations in cases involving the arrest of foreigners.

This course was conducted from 29^th May 2023 to 9^th June 2023 at 8.30 am to 4.30 p.m daily for the period of two weeks in the Housing & Local Government Training Institute (I-KPKT) Bukit tinggi, Bentong Pahang. The course was taught by Ms. Jittima Jehmong, who is an experienced Thai Language teacher from CALC, UPM.

This course covered topics including recognising and pronouncing Thai consonants and vowels accurately and fluently as well as basic communication in Thai language using expressions in daily life. At the end of the course, the participants were required to sit for competency test that included oral and written components.

In general, the course was organised successfully. The participants were generally very active and committed in participating in all the sessions conducted throughout the course. Participants also managed to obtain good results in the competency test conducted at the end of the course. This collaboration will continue with more sessions with CALC UPM in the future to meet the need to achieve sustainability of the course. In addition, the sessions will also be continued to ensure that all course participants obtain a satisfactory level of language competence to carry out their duties effectively as officers of the Maritime Agency.
