Academic Word List

Historically, the Academic Word List' (AWL) was developed by Averil Coxhead at the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The words in the list have been found to appear with great frequency in a broad range of academic texts. The following video provides further description on the background information of AWL.

Familiarising yourself with AWL can help you to become a good writer. One of the main criteria in academic writing is the need to write using the right tone, and this can be achieved by using the right vocabulary.

Below is a link that contains some of the most common words that can be found on AWL. You may read through the list to familiarise yourself with the words and try to apply them in your written text.
