MELAB

The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) is an advanced level standardised examination for adult non-native speakers of English. The test is intended for:

a) Students applying to educational institutions where the language of instruction is English

b) Professionals who need English for work or training purposes

c) Anyone interested in obtaining a general assessment of their English language proficiency for educational or employment opportunities

The MELAB is a secure test battery and is administered only by authorised official examiners. Many educational institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries accept the MELAB as an alternative to TOEFL.



REGISTRATION

a) Complete the MELAB Identification Form.

b) Bring the completed identification form, identification card/passport, passport-sized photo, and the test fee to CALC office by the specified registration deadline. Registration will not proceed if you fail to provide the requested items.

c) The test fee without the speaking test is RM 600.00 (RM550 for UPM Staff and Students). We only accept cash payment at the moment.

d) Your registration is valid for six months. The test fee is non-refundable.

TEST DAY - CODE OF CONDUCT (what to bring, prohibited items)

a) You will need to bring a valid original passport [Non-Malaysian] or identity card [Malaysian] on your test date; otherwise, you will not be allowed to take the test.

b) You are advised not to bring any unnecessary baggage, mobile phones or any valuables to the examination venue as these items will not be allowed into the exam hall. CALC will not be responsible for any loss or damages. Stationeries will be provided.

c) In the event that your Passport is being held by the Immigration Department for Visa processing, please request that it be returned to you for the period of the MELAB test in order for you to take the test. We will not accept any other form of identification including Letter of Authorisation/Acknowledgement from the Immigration Department, university, or college nor Certified True Copy of your original passport.


MELAB SCORE REPORTS

How to get the score report:

a) You can collect your unofficial MELAB score reports from CALC office. Official MELAB score reports will be sent directly to up to two universities or institutions that you listed at the bottom of the Official Identification Form before taking the test. These two reports and your copy of the score report are included in the test fee. Please note that MELAB scores are valid for 2 years.

b) You may indicate that scores should be released only if the final score is at or above a certain score. Please write:

ONLY SEND IF SCORE IS X OR HIGHER on your Official Identification Form

If you receive a lower score, CaMLA will only send your personal score report to CALC.

When to get the score report

You will receive your score report within seven to eight weeks after the test is taken. Check the CALC website to see if score reports have arrived. Candidates must show their ID when picking up their score reports. Score reports are confidential. No scores will be given over the phone, by email or to third party.

Ordering extra official score reports

You are entitled to receive more than two official score reports with an additional fee.  You will need to attach an additional list to the Official Identification Form. Refer to table below for additional fee.

Rescoring the test

If you believe there is an error in your score, you can have your MELAB rescored. You must request a rescore within ONE month of receiving your score report. Your test can only be rescored once. Fill in the MELAB Rescore Request Form and fax it to Michigan (fax number is on the form). Your rescore fees will be refunded if an error is confirmed. Refer to table below for additional fee. Please be informed that CaMLA tests are highly reliable and errors rarely occur.
