Bismillah ar-rahman ar-rahiim
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh dan salaam sejahtera
Happy New Year 2017.
Welcome to the web page of the centre for the Advancement of Language Competence – more commonly known as CALC in UPM.
CALC was established in 2012 to provide greater emphasis to the teaching and learning of languages at UPM. Most students will need to engage with CALC in order to fulfil their English language requirements. Additionally, students who are registered for academic programs that require a global language as part of their program requirement will also have to engage with the center. Several global languages are offered at CALC including French, Japanese, Arabic, Mandarin, Turkish, Thai and Myanmarese. Foreign students are encouraged to take the Malay language to fulfil their Global Language requirement.
English language courses at CALC are innovatively weaved into a package – the English Language Experience, or ELEx – which provides students with the opportunity to develop their ability in the language in various contexts. In addition to this, Global language courses, including the Malay language, often involves students in activities outside of the lecture rooms which helps to increase their proficiency in the language as well as develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the language as well as it culture.
Besides offering language proficiency courses, CALC also provide free and paid editing and translation services to students and staff on campus as well as the public in general. Rates for these services can be found in the website.
We, at CALC, believe that proficiency in the English language and in Global languages will not only provide value-added elements to the UPM graduate but also give them a wider world view and subsequently develop a graduate who is more complete and confident.
At CALC, we strive to make our language proficiency courses interesting and effective. As such, I take this opportunity to wish all students – Enjoy learning languages at UPM!
